Kathleen Hanna, in a charitable mood, has bequeathed her papers—’zines, presumably correspondence and material pertaining to her career in Bikini Kill, among other things—to NYU’s Fales Library, the branch of the library system holding a number of special collections. The Kathleen Hanna Papers seem to be the first major acquisition for the library’s brand new Riot Grrrrl Collection. Eunice Johnson was a partner to her husband’s success. When John Johnson wanted to create the black equivalent of Life magazine, Eunice Johnson named it Ebony. When she was asked to put on a fashion show for charity, she took it on the road and raised millions. Then when those ebony-hued women couldn’t find makeup in the cities they traveled to, she helped her publisher husband realize the necessity and profitability of cosmetics for black, brown and tan women. So today while the publishing part of the company struggles, women across the globe spend hundreds of millions on Fashion Fair makeup.

    365:310 Why?:

Someone asked why I tend to be looking down when I take the candids on my walks. I don’t have a definitive answer. It’s something of a mixture of: I don’t want to step on the dog. I don’t want to step in dog poo. I don’t want to step in a hole, trip and break something. I’m thinking. If I grinned like a idiot on my walks staring into a camera, the neighbors might think I’m touched and call the authorities.

    365:362 Coming down with something:

I’m all red and puffy and this year looks to be going out with a wheeze.

    365:363 Flash:

Still playing with the flash. Other than the fact that it looks like I washed in vaseline, I like the exposure.

    365:359 Merry Christmas:

Holidays are tiring.
My aunt gave me the sweater a few Christmases ago. Now wearing it’s a tradition.

    365:358 Last minute shopping:

Yes, I know Christmas comes the same day each year. That doesn’t mean I’m prepared. I was prepared enough to have a back-up plan, though.

“This was one of the things that was in my head when I was writing the “in defense of captions” post — while that’s useful or could be useful, a technical solution alone is never going to solve the problem of accuracy in the media. You could take a photographer’s image straight from the camera, not even processed with Photoshop, put it on the wire, and it’s the caption that provides the accuracy for that picture. The caption is the place where it’s easy to mislead the reader. [I have written about this in my essay “Photography as a Weapon.”] The caption is the thing that provides accurate context. And without an accurate context or with a misleading context, you can completely distort the meaning of an image. At the end of the day it comes back to old-fashioned ethics. You have to trust your people on the ground and you have to drill into them the ethical standards that your organization has.”

“And while there will always be something mysterious in the workings of the muse, I do not subscribe to the common belief that creativity is a magical gift bestowed on some and not on others. Like drawing, doing algebra, or speaking a second language, having original ideas is a mental skill that can be developed and, with practice, can become second nature.”
On the Care and Feeding of Ideas -Sean Michael Ragan
